Adolescents are portrayed in research and in public media outlets such as television, radio, and film as individuals who are so preoccupied with self-discovery that they do not position themselves in society. Social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest capitalized on this perception by advertising opportunities for self-expression and asking members to build profiles that depict their personal attributes, hobbies, and intentions.
